With little warning, another prime late night music venue in Knoxville is closing its doors for good – and less than 1 week before they were to celebrate a full year of business. A sad day for Tennessee and the Southeast in general. To our knowledge they had a handful of shows booked for the next few weeks:

10/15 Orchard Lounge

10/17 Pnuma Trio and Ott

10/28 The Official STS9 Afterparty with Evol Intent, Two Fresh and Treasure Fingers

10/31 The Crystal Method

Out of those shows we know of only one confirmed relocation. Pnuma and Ott will be playing at The Cider House in Knoxville now on October 22nd. You can find more information on that show at The Valarium/Cider House website. We will post up information on any further relocation/rescheduling that we hear of as the information becomes available.

We had known about this for a while but were asked to keep it under wraps to allow the owners to announce it at their discretion. After a long run and a lot of good memories, The World Grotto is closing its doors for the last time. Their last official show is scheduled for this Friday, Sept 4th (The New Skool Jumpoff, check our upcoming events for more info) and there will be a farewell potluck/open jam session the next day on Saturday where people are welcome to come out with some food to enjoy drinks and music at this amazing venue one last time.

We are definitely going to miss this place. We’ve had so many good times in the crystal cave but in its wake we are glad to welcome The Catalyst as our new venue of choice in Knoxville, TN.

Letter from Susie Dew (owner of World Grotto):

Friends, Fans and Lovers of World Grotto, it is with a heavy heart that I write to tell you that this coming weekend will be the last we will spend together at what has been the World Grotto for the past 5 years. During this time there have been countless hours of dancing, so much love shared through laughter, smiles, hugs, and beautiful memories made for many. When I began the Grotto I had a strong vision to bring world culture and art to my beloved home town, and to create a space for artists share their passion. The Grotto has shape shifted over time to accommodate both what seemed to be the desire of the community as well as the very real monetary needs necessary to satisfy the ever hungry mouth, of what has truly been like my child, well more like quadruplets! However, the Grotto has maintained it’s most important function, to be an entertainment venue. I have said many times that my most important job is to throw the BEST party over and over, and I feel in this way at least I have succeeded. If the all happiness shared by all of you in this magical place translated into dollars, things would be very different. However, given many factors, too many to mention, the Grotto has been unable to support itself. The truth is, it has been a tremendous struggle from day one, but I kept fighting, believing with all my heart we could get there, but it was not so. Knowing when to let go is probably one of the hardest things to accept, but once you do there is no turning back, and this is where we are now, it simply didn’t work.

 

As many of you know, I have two beautiful daughters who have unfortunately at times taken a backseat to the hardships, the hours, the stress, and the fun of this life choice. Although I did make this choice with them in mind, I thought by now the business would prove to be successful, but this is not the case. It is time now for me to focus on my children, on myself and a new life. The Grotto has taught me so much. And I truly feel that it has been my purpose up to this point, and now my next divine order will begin. It will largely depend on each of you to make sure the beautiful vibration that we, together created reverbs forever. The new owners, while our visions are not exactly the same,( but let’s keep in mind, mine didn’t work) intend to keep the downstairs an entertainment venue. And they are truly a good group of people that I feel confident will care for the Grotto in my absence. So please continue to fill it with your beautiful faces, your crazy dance moves, and of course the reason we all show up, the music.

 

Most importantly I want to thank the many artists who have taken the stage, sharing your gifts with us so that we could loose ourselves in your music, thank you for the magic. To the many visual artists whose work has donned the gallery walls to make the place even more beautiful and interesting. To those who have helped me from the beginning, those who helped me build the place, to each of you who have worked for and with me even when you didn’t get a pay check, even when you were exhausted or frustrated and those who sat through the many unfortunate nights when nobody came. For all the energy, ideas and commitment, you have no idea what you believing in the Grotto and in me has meant. And to those, you know who you are, who stepped up and paid the utility bill, the rent or taxes, just so we could keep going and to those who helped in every little way that may have seemed to go unnoticed, thank you. And lastly, to all of you who have been there show after show paying us your hard earned money, showing love and support for the arts and the Grotto. The Fans, without you there would have been no Grotto. And of course to my family, friends and children for their continued support. I love each of you, and you and the Grotto has changed me forever. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

 

Now it is time to party one more time, please come out EVERY night this week to experience every moment we have left in the Grotto, and Saturday night will be a very special evening, we are having a farewell celebration that is open to all, including anyone who would like to take the stage. To name a few who have already signed up, Jonathan Sexton, Cruz Contreras, Erick Baker, Davis Mitchell, Arpetrio, and many more will be paying tribute to the Grotto. If you would like to participate on stage please let me know asap and we will make room for everyone. This will be a very special night and I look forward to seeing you all. Oh yea, it is a pot luck, so bring your favorite dish to share. Sorry to be long winded but this is important to us all. Again, thank you, thank you , thank you and many many blessings to you all.
